Free Hat Crochet Patterns:

November 1st – Day 1 – Lightweight Grace Tinley Beanie
You can’t go wrong with the classic granny stitch crochet pattern! It’s been one of my favorites since I learned how to crochet. The pattern is created by skipping a few stitches, and then working double crochet clusters into that skipped space.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 60 – 185 yards of lightweight #3 yarn. I used Emma’s Yarn Comfy Cotton DK, a hand dyed yarn from Four Purls in Winter Haven, which is such a lovely yarn to work with. It is a 50/50 blend of Superwash Merino Wool and Cotton. It’s lightweight, soft and squishy with great stitch definition, not itchy and it’s durable, but a cotton/bamboo blend like Berroco Modern Cotton DK or Lion Brand Coboo would be perfect for warmer weather or donating, or a wool blend like WeCrochet Swish DK Yarn, Lion Brand Wool Ease DK and Berroco Vintage DK would be perfect for a cozier hat.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 2 – Striped Dylan Claire Beanie
This crocheted beanie features stripes of white to represent Retinoblastoma Awareness, and gold to represent Childhood Cancer Awareness, but this would be so fun in any combination of colors, even one solid color every other row and scraps of colors from your stash as the alternating color!
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 42 – 132 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish in the Honey and White colorways. If you’ve never worked with Swish before, it is soft and squishy and oh so cozy to wear – just like a hug!
A cotton/bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo, would be perfect for donating, or a wool, like the Swish, or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, would be perfect for a cozier hat.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 3 – Selene Beanie
The Selene Beanie is worked in an easy shell stitch pattern similar to that of the classic granny stitch pattern. It’s worked in simple double crochet clusters, and the lacy pattern comes from skipping a few stitches.
My shells slant downward on a soft diagonal, but if you turn at the end of each round, they’ll work out in straight vertical rows.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 50 – 155 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish in the Clementine colorway.

Day 4 – Haylee Beanie
The Haylee Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple half double crochet stitches. I love the texture of half double crochet when the fabric is turned at the end of each round, though I designed this beanie with turned rounds to help keep the seam straight.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 51 – 177 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish in the Dove Heather colorway.

Day 5 – Super Chunky Dylan Claire Beanie
The Super Chunky Dylan Claire Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches. One of the perks of working in Super Bulky #6 Yarn is that there are only 2 – 3 rounds of increasing and in total 6 to 11 rounds so chunky beanies work up so, so fast!
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 50 – 175 yards of super bulky weight #6 yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in the Gray Marble colorway.
As a cold weather beanie, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always a 100% superwash merino wool or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Acrylic yarns, Lion Brand’s Hometown or Mandala Thick & Quick, do also work. Normally, I would stress that they’re good for cool, but not windy, weather as the wind tends to go right through, but a Super Bulky weight yarn does provide better coverage, even in a 100% acrylic. If you don’t have a Super Bulky weight yarn, or are having trouble finding one you like, you can also hold 2-3 Strands of a Worsted Weight #4 Yarn, like Red Heart Super Saver, Berroco Vintage or Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage.
You’ll also want to have an M13/9mm crochet hook.

Day 6 – Under the Attitude Hat
The Under That Attitude Hat features shell stitches, and an adorable ruffled edge to add a feminine touch to any outfit! This hat is fairly beginner-friendly because it is comprised of double and single crochet stitches. The pattern is written for adult size.
You’re going to need approximately 225 yards of DK weight #3 yarn. I used Bad Sheep DK in the color Murex. This is a stunning hand-dyed wool blend from sunny Florida. This DK is 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon. I love using hand-dyed yarns for my projects!

Day 7 – Grace Tinley Preemie Beanie
The Grace Tinley Preemie Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches and the classic granny stitch pattern. These teeny tiny hats work up quickly – you can do all 3 sizes in less than half an hour.
You’re going to need 18 – 35 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn – perfect for scraps!
I’ve put together a complete Guide to Crocheting & Knitting for Preemie Babies. The number one thing that I am going to recommend above anything else is first check with the organization that you plan to donate to. Each organization has their own needs, which can vary from time to time, and each one also has their own set of guidelines, like what kind of yarn and/or colors to use or not to use as well as things like if they accept donations from a pet friendly home, but in this guide, I talk about what I find to be the most common across preemie organizations for crocheting and knit items.
My original beanies were worked in Red Heart Soft. I used WeCrochet Swish in the video tutorial. I also love using Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage for beanies. If you need a wool free option, I recommend Red Heart Super Saver (softens with first wash). If you want to work with cotton, I recommend looking for a blend (like cotton and acrylic) as it needs another fiber combined with it to retain its shape and to be able to bounce back – 100% cotton will only grow out of shape – my favorites are Berroco Modern Cotton and Lion Brand Coboo. If you’re donating your beanies, make sure to check the organization’s guidelines first as they each have their own preferences. Mainly, you want a soft yarn that can withstand multiple washing and drying.
You’ll also want to have an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 8 – Grace Tinley Beanie
The Grace Tinley Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches and the classic granny stitch pattern.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 42 – 148 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish in the Voyage Heather colorway.

Day 9 – Monster Beanie
This fun beanie doubles as a wig, or with the added eyes, makes for a cozy, Monsterous beanie.
This pattern comes in Adult size. You’re going to need about 600 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn, but feel free to use your favorite!
A cotton/bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo, would be perfect for donating, or a wool, like WeCrochet Swish, or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, would be perfect for a cozier hat.
You’ll also want to have an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 10 – Octavia Beanie
The Octavia Beanie is a fun crochet beanie pattern worked in a combination of half double crochet stitches and post stitches. The post stitches creates neat vertical lines that add just the perfect amount of texture.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 70 – 200 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish.

Day 11 – Zoey Beanie
The Octavia Beanie is a fun crochet beanie pattern worked in a combination of half double crochet stitches and post stitches. The post stitches creates neat vertical lines that add just the perfect amount of texture.
This pattern includes 7 sizes from Newborn through Adult. You’re going to need 37 – 171 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used WeCrochet Swish in the Dove Heather colorway.
You’ll also want to have both a H8/5mm and I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 12 – Super Chunky Striped Dylan Claire Beanie
The Super Chunky Striped Dylan Claire Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches and fun stripes.
I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in the Gray Marble and Barley colorways.
Day 13 – Grace Tinley Elf Hat
The Grace Tinley Elf Hat is a fun crochet Christmas hat pattern worked in the classic granny stitch pattern.
This pattern is written for Adult. You’re going to need 350 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used about half a skein each of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Red and Jelly Bean Green, and a small amount of White for mine.
A cotton/bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo, would be perfect for donating, or I love a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, for something a little cozier.
You’ll also want to have an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 14 – Bus Stop Beret
The Bus Stop Beret is a fun Fall accessory that works up fast, and is perfect for an adventurous or advanced beginner. It is written for adult size, but you can easily adjust it with fewer or more rounds.
You will need a size I9/5.5 mm crochet hook. The beret uses approximately 193 yards of a size #4 worsted weight yarn. I chose 220 Superwash Merino from Cascade Yarns in the color cream. This 100% superwash wool yarn has been my go-to for accessories lately! It is so squishy, soft, and machine washable!
Another good yarn option would be Berroco Vintage, which is an acrylic/wool/nylon blend. If wool isn’t your thing you can try Cumulous from Juniper Moon, which is a cotton/nylon blend that is incredibly soft to the touch!

Day 15 – Dylan Claire Preemie Beanie
The Dylan Claire Preemie Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern worked in simple double crochet stitches. These teeny tiny hats work up quickly – you can do all 3 sizes in less than half an hour.
You’re going to need 15 – 30 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn – perfect for scraps!

Mainly, you want a soft yarn that can withstand multiple washing and drying.
You’ll also want to have an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 16 – Caden Beanie
The Caden Beanie is a soft and squishy crochet hat worked in puff stitches and finished with a brim that uses post stitches. If you don’t want to change it up for the brim, you can work the puff stitches further down, but I do like the thicker brim to help keep my ears warm.
This pattern is written for Adult. You’re going to need 185 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used Red Heart’s With Love in the Tan and White colorways for mine.
A cotton/bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo, would be perfect for donating, or I love a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, for something a little cozier.
You’ll also want to have a K10.5/6.5mm crochet hook.

Day 17 – Genesis Slouchy Hat
The Genesis Slouchy Hat is a cute granny square slouchy hat that combines traditional granny squares with the classic granny stitch.
This pattern is written for Adult. You’re going to need 210 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used Lion Brand Wool Ease in the Umber [Brown] (35 Yards), Grey Heather (55 Yards) and Linen [Cream] (120 Yards) colorways for mine.
There are many yarns that would be perfect for slouchy hats! The first question I would start with is will it be for warm weather or cold weather? A cotton blend yarn like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo would be perfect for warmer weather, and a wool blend yarn, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, would be better for cooler weather.
With the holes in the fabric, especially in the band, I would not use this slouchy hat in cold, windy weather, unless a second, solid layer was attached to the bottom of the band, which would cover your ears and provide warmth, but great for cooler Spring and Fall days.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 18 – It’s Football Season Beanie
The It’s Football Season Beanie is an easy crochet beanie that starts with a double crochet base and features fun striping and some hand stitching to mimic a fun past time, Football.
This pattern comes in Newborn through Adult sizes. You’re going to need about 100 – 225 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used Red Heart’s With Love in the Chocolate and White colorways, but feel free to use your favorite!

Day 19 – Citrus Grove Bucket Hat
The Citrus Grove Bucket Hat was originally designed for Summer time with its oranges and lemons, but I think it would also make a cute pumpkin patch hat! Swap out the lemons for all oranges and do one upright leaf as a stem and *poof* you’ve got pumpkins for Fall!
You will need a size G6/4 mm crochet hook. I chose Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for my hat as it has excellent structure to make the brim on the stiffer side. You will need about 180 yards of white, 45 yards of tangerine, 45 yards of goldenrod, and 35 yards of grass.
Another perfect yarn option would be Circulo Natural Color Max. This cotton is a little softer to the touch than the 24/7 Cotton, but it will hold its shape just as well for a bucket hat!

Day 20 – Soleil Slouchy Hat
The Soleil Slouchy Hat is a cute granny square slouchy hat that combines solid granny squares with the classic granny stitch.
This pattern is written for Adult. You’re going to need 120 yards of worsted weight #4 yarn. I used Red Heart’s With Love in the Iced Aqua and White colorways for mine.
You’ll also want to have an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Day 21 – Dinosaur Spike Hat
This pattern comes in Toddler size, which fits up to 5 years, but there are Pattern Notes that explain how you can make this hat in any size. You’re going to need some worsted weight #4 yarn. Shawna used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in the Dark Olive and Greybeard colorways.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 22 – The Criss-Cross Bucket Hat
The Criss-Cross Bucket Hat is an easy, beginner-friendly bucket hat pattern that features a criss-cross pop of color. It’s a very versatile hat that can be worn all year round. This hat works up quickly and can be great for gifting or selling at markets. Available in five sizes (baby to large adult), this is a great hat to make for your whole crew or family!
If you are making a summer bucket hat, I recommend a cotton yarn like Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor, Juniper Moon Cumulus, and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton. Ella Rae Cozy Alpaca, Jody Long Alba Aran (a blend of wool, alpaca, and viscose), or Berroco Vintage Yarn (a blend of acrylic, wool, and nylon) would make great cold-weather versions of this hat! In addition, you will also need a H8/5 mm crochet hook.
There’s also a coordinating tote bag that you can make to match this bucket hat!

Day 23 – Dylan Claire Beanie
The Dylan Claire Beanie is worked in simple double crochet stitches and is perfect for late fall, winter or early spring. With 7 sizes included from Newborn through Adult, you can make one for every member of the family! Embellish with a pom pom on the top, or leave as is. You can even sew on appliques or buttons for a fun twist. You’re going to need 75 – 195 yards of worsted weight yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn for mine in the Taupe colorway, but feel free to use your favorite.

Day 24 – Lightweight Veronica Preemie Beanies
The Lightweight Veronica Preemie Beanie is an easy crochet beanie pattern that starts with a simple double crochet crown and then extends out into V-stitches. These teeny tiny hats work up quickly – you can do all 3 sizes in less than an hour.
You’re going to need a small amount of lightweight #3 yarn.
My original beanies were worked in Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight from Hobby Lobby. I love using WeCrochet Swish DK, Berroco Vintage DK and Lion Brand Wool Ease DK for beanies. If you want to work with cotton, I recommend looking for a blend (like cotton and acrylic) as it needs another fiber combined with it to retain its shape and to be able to bounce back – 100% cotton will only grow out of shape – my favorites are Berroco Modern Cotton DK and Lion Brand Coboo. If you’re donating your beanies, make sure to check the organization’s guidelines first as they each have their own preferences. Mainly, you want a soft yarn that can withstand multiple washing and drying.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 25 – Through the Window Beanie
The Through the Window Beanie is a fun crochet pattern that uses the mosaic crochet technique. Don’t let it scare you! It’s comprised of simple single crochet stitches, chains and easy double crochets. While my favorite way to work this technique is with a variegated color underneath, and a solid coordinating color on top, it also looks great with both solid colors, and even looks neat all in one color – think white on white texture.
This pattern is written for Newborn through Adult. You’ll need a small amount of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in Buff and Reef for the Adult Small, in Buff and Tea Leaf for the Toddler and in Buff and Chocolate for the 3-6 Months.
A cotton/bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo, would be perfect for donating, or I love a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage, for something a little cozier.
You’ll also want to have an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Day 26 – Be Together Beanie
The Be Together Beanie is a hat designed for when you want to look cute for Fall, but you live in a warmer climate! You’re going to need some Sport weight #2 size yarn, and this project is great for scraps! You will only need about 62 yards of color 1, and 114 yards of color 2. Emily used Island Sport from Beach Bunny Yarns in the colorways Cider and Thankful. You’ll also need a size F/3.75mm crochet hook.
If wool isn’t your thing you can use Queensland Coastal Cotton Fine, or Circulo Charme for this lightweight hat!

Day 27 – Chunky Haylee Beanie
The Chunky Haylee Beanie is an easy half double crochet beanie worked in cozy chunky yarn that works up quickly!
This pattern is written for Newborn through Adult. You’ll need 40 – 215 Yards of Chunky Weight #5 Yarn – I used Premier Yarns Serenity Chunky in the Berry Burst and Pristine colorways.
As a cold weather beanie, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always a 100% superwash merino wool or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Hue + Me. Acrylic yarns, like Lion Brand’s Mandala Impressions, do also work. Normally, I would stress that they’re good for cool, but not windy, weather as the wind tends to go right through, but a chunky weight yarn does provide better coverage, even in a 100% acrylic. If you don’t have a chunky weight yarn, or like me, you are having trouble finding one you like, you can hold 2 strands together of a Worsted Weight #4 Yarn, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage.
You’ll also want to have an L11/8mm crochet hook.

Day 28 – Chunky Dylan Claire Beanie
The Chunky Dylan Claire Beanie is an easy double crochet beanie worked in cozy chunky yarn that works up quickly!
This pattern is written for Newborn through Toddler. You’ll need 67 – 116 Yards of Chunky Weight #5 Yarn.
If you don’t have a chunky weight yarn, or like me, you are having trouble finding one you like, you can hold 2 strands together of a Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – this is what I’ve done for my beanies. The solid blue beanie is 2 strands of Lion Brand Wool Ease, the marled beanie in the center is 2 strands of Cascade Pacific and the solid brown beanie is 2 strands of Berroco Vintage.
You’ll also want to have an L11/8mm crochet hook.

Day 29 – Criss-Cross Chunky Beanie
The Criss-Cross Chunky Beanie is a beginner-friendly crochet pattern that works up really quickly! The chunky yarn and easy stitches allow even the newest crocheter to work up a beautiful beanie in a short amount of time. For those seasoned crocheters, this pattern works great if you need a quick gift, are making hats to donate, or if you want to sell beanies at markets! The color combination on this beanie pattern is totally customizable, so your possibilities are endless!
This pattern uses super bulky yarn. While it was originally worked up in 100% Acrylic yarn, it could easily be made in wool yarn or a wool-blend. Lion Brand Hue + Me or Juniper Moon Big Merino Wool would be great options! You will also need a 7 mm crochet hook.
